To Plink or to Strum

THat is the question.

I am contemplating taking music lessons this winter. But two decisions need to be made.

One is do I have the $20 or so a week and the time needed to practice (both could likely be found). THe other is what instrument.

I am tempted to go back and reacquaint myself with the piano. But I would also love to get more accomplished on the guitar. Can't do both. Hmmmmmm...

  1. Stupid question, but do you have access to a piano to practice on? Like, right at home? Access is everything. If you decide on a guitar, I'd be happy to help you pick one when next you're in the Large City East of You. I've got two of them, and have played for many years; there are times when I wish I had taken more piano, but the guitars have made good companions.

  2. OH yeah I have the guitar already (have had one for 15 years or so) but have only sort of self taught basic chords.

ANd the piano, well that would be in teh building next door (ie the church), not in the house.

  3. To paraphrase Stephen Stills, play the one that's with you. And you can play 2000 songs with three chords.

I'd suggest getting your guitar set up at Colosimo's or Coran's in the Large City East of You Where Your Partner Comes From; get it restrung, etc, so it'll be in tip top shape for playing. I don't play all that well, but being able to accompany singing has proved to be a priceless skill.

On the other hand, maybe you're looking at playing classical or fingerpicking style, in which case you are definitely heading for lessons.
